Air Quality Forecast

Air quality forecasting is very important in environmental management at the local, regional, national and international.

This forecasting is a very complex field where it is important to have count on experienced professionals who have great experience. The use of forecasting modelsing tools forlike air quality, and weather forecasting information, detailed analysis of recent air quality, satellite images, etc ... are also essential to make a good forecast.

Jaume Targa is part of the team conducting the daily prediction of pollution levels in the UK for the British Department of Environment (DEFRA) and the Regional AuthoritiesDevolved Administrations (DAS) since 2003.

The team led by AEA is required to carry out the forecasting of air quality for the whole of the United Kingdom. In order to forecast air quality, the team uses its expertise in the field together with different tools available.

Some forecasting models like CMAQ, which were developed internally forby DEFRA and DAas, are used to forecastpredict air quality within 24-72 hours. Predictions Forecasts are also used from MACC (Monitoring Atmospheric Composition and Climate) which is a pre-operational service from that pre-operational European's GMES program.

It is important to inform the public of environmental information. During 2006-2008, Jaume Targa managed a project for BSkyB corporation (from the UK) to inform the public about air quality levels through its news channel Sky News. The information covered both the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

The prediction forecasting and nowcasting during pollution episodes are essential to understand how air quality levels are changing. However, further analysis of the episodes is also essential to better understand the scope and potential impact on the population.
